Drug Store Raid is a fresh blast of punk energy from Helsinki’s underground

As someone who grew up surrounded by my dad’s punk records—everything from The Clash to Dead Kennedys—there’s a certain rush I get when I hear a band that captures that raw energy while bringing something fresh to the table. That’s exactly what I felt when I first heard Drug Store Raid’s latest track, “Vi Är Finnjävlar”. Hailing from Helsinki’s underground scene, these guys blend post-punk grit with biting satire in a way that feels both familiar and totally new. The track’s title, which translates to “we are finnbastards,” is a cheeky nod to identity, perfectly suited for a band that thrives on a mix of sarcasm, humor, and dark realism. The song dives into the quirks of modern life in Finland, offering a cynical yet strangely relatable look at society—something that would have easily fit in with the punk anthems I grew up on. Musically, it’s a whirlwind. The jagged guitar riffs, driving basslines, and sharp vocals remind me of that anarchic energy from bands like The Birthday Party, but with a fresh twist. There’s a funky, almost danceable edge buried under the layers of grit that makes it impossible to stand still. It’s clear that Drug Store Raid isn’t just mimicking the past—they’re pushing boundaries and creating something uniquely their own. This track is the first taste of their upcoming album, Background Music for Family Arguments, and I can already tell it’s going to be one hell of a ride. Drug Store Raid manages to capture the angst and rebellion of classic punk while layering it with modern sounds and commentary. For anyone who, like me, grew up finding solace in loud guitars and unapologetic lyrics, this band is a refreshing blast of chaotic brilliance.
